2004 Land Rover Discovery SE

The client ordering this truck wanted something special, with a unique look, but without a big budget. Of course, he also wanted reliability and low-cost upkeep, so we started his build with one of our new, re-manufactured "crate" engines which feature "better than new" engineering upgrades to address the inherent problem areas of the 4.6l Rover V8. Most importantly, the block is remanned with flanged or "top hat" cylinder liners that eliminate the "loose liner" knock and restabilize the block architecture in the sense of "blueprinting" critical internal alignments. Likewise, the super heavy duty ARP chromoly cylinder studs in conjunction with the reconditioned cylinder heads and top-notch Elring composite gaskets address the persistent head gasket issues. Upon installation, the engine gets all new support ancillaries such as a new radiator, Airtex water pump, OE low-temp opening thermostat, OE hoses, and all new ignition components, including 8mm wires and correct Champion plugs. Along with new oxygen sensors and air filter we deliver a clean running motor which operates at a cool temp of 188 to 194 degrees. There really is no sense owning, much less upgrading, a D2 Disco with taking this critical though expensive step of putting a new engine in. After all, you'll have to sooner or later! To achieve the "look" the client wanted but without spending a bunch of money, we opted for a simple steel bull bar bumper in front to give its some off-road cred. Clever multi-element aftermarket LED running lights give outrageous illumination when called on but also give the truck's front some recognition with a pair of Daytime Running Lights incorporated. We also upgraded the OE headlights to powerful 18,000 lumens COB LED bulbs and took the opportunity to change the factory bumper fogs to powerful "Euro" yellow LEDs. Most importantly, we wanted a strong stance and improved off-road capability, but without a lift, so we opted for the black "NATO" style steel wheels which incorparate a +25mm offset mounted with monster 31.5" Nitto Terra Grappler Tires! The truck's appearance was also subtly upgraded with a change to black lettering all around and new style, silver on black logo badges. The fender flares were filled, sanded, and textured to like new condition. Inside, the headliner was upgraded to a lifetime guaranteed fabric replaced the droopy original, smart-looking genuine black leather French-stitched lever covers replaced the worn out vinyl originals, and an inexpensive but very useful 9" touchscreen with Apple Carplay and vivid back-up camera stands in for the dated cassette radio. Of course, all electrical and mechanical systems were checked out and repaired as needed. New brakes and a "3 Amigos" countermeasure insures trouble-free stopping. And all sunroof drains were cleared and resealed to limit the bothersome interior leakage common to these Discos. A new remote key was configured and all interior backlighting got new bulbs as needed. All in all, the result, we hope you will agree, is a rejuvenated and updated classic with strong curb appeal that will give great service with for years to come.
